James Nicas

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Dr. James Andrew Nicas on December 3, 2018, with his loving wife of 60 years, Rose Marie, at his side. Dr. Nicas is also survived by his daughters, Camilla Nicas of Edmonton and Belinda Nicas of Calgary. Born in Lethbridge, AB, Jim was the youngest of three boys. He was predeceased by his brothers, John and Peto.
At age twelve Jim decided to become a doctor when his father died in his arms of Hodgkin’s Disease. Dr. Nicas received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Alberta. He also trained at the RCAF Institute of Aviation Medicine in Toronto and served as a medical officer in the Edmonton Reserve Light Bomber Squadron. Dr. Nicas practiced as an Orthopedic Surgeon in Lethbridge and later as a Physiatrist in Edmonton. For many years Dr. Nicas was the Director of the Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Unit at the Aberhart Hospital and later at the Glenrose. He also worked at the WCB.
Dr. Nicas met the love of his life, Rose Marie “the beautiful girl in the green sweater”, at a university dance. He loved his family, his dogs, travelling, air shows and collecting stamps and coins. He was a lifelong member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity. In his later years he was struck with a debilitating disease (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy) which necessitated his move to Capital Care Grandview where he received wonderful care.
Funeral Rite Friday, December 14 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 9831 – 75 Street, with Reverend Father Yuriy Suchevan officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alberta SPCA or the Calgary Humane Society.
